Travel is my thing. It’s my addiction, my refuge, my language when I can’t seem to express myself. There isn’t anything more gratifying to me than exploring this beautiful planet, because it humbles and reminds me of just how small I am.
Of all the places I’ve been, Italy is my heart. It’s the one place that makes me feel as though I’m not alone, even when I’m traveling solo. It’s filled with vibrant colors, a sultry language, whimsical wine, pasta and pizza that doesn’t weigh you down, fashion, nature, and gelato!!! Not to mention the history and architecture that takes your breath away.
When I talk about Italy, some people automatically assume that I spend an arm and a leg getting and being there. That’s so far from the truth. Like any Country, there is something for every budget. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a lover of indulgence, but I also know how to budget and stick with simple things. On my last visit to Milan, we decided to change up our norm and stay at a hostel. What an experience!
Surprisingly, the hostel experience has been on my bucket list for some time. I went to college and survived the dorm life, so I was pretty sure a hostel wouldnt kill me lol. Hostels are lodgings for people who don’t mind sharing space. When I say space I mean you are sleeping in a room with strangers and sharing bathroom facilities as well. Some hostels have private rooms if needed. It all depends on the place. Hostels can be as low as $6 a night and as high as $50 and more. Once again it all depends on your stay.
The hostel we chose happened to be a very popular one. Ostello Bello Grande is one of 8 hostel chains in Europe. It has been awarded so many titles and accolades for its pristine service and location. The Milan location is literally a 10 minute walk from the train station making it soooo convenient and easy during the stay. We ended up paying $30 per person for the night. This included dinner and breakfast and we shared a dorm with 2 other females in a 5 bed room.
When we first arrived we were greeted with smiles. The staff was definitely young and hip. As they poured our welcome drink, wine of course, we listened to all the tips that were given to make our stay amazing. We also got a lovely preview of the hostel. I was amazed by the way the guests interacted with each other. It felt like a day party with people playing card games, listening to music, drinking, and just casually enjoying each other’s company. Once we got everything settled, we were given our room keys and off we were.
The room was dope! Art and bright colors jumped out immediately as we stepped in. We chose our beds, put our suitcases in our lockers, and set off to explore. The amenities made it feel like a frat house. Sooo much to do during down time. The rooftop view was amazing. The bar and bartenders were full of energy. The place was so well decorated and clean. Super clean! We stayed around for a bit, but still had some shopping to do so we left for city center with anticipation of what the night would look like there.
We spent that night hanging out downstairs by the bar. At night the DJ comes out, karaoke is allowed, and the bar is packed. As I sat sipping, I was in awe of the diversity in the room. People from all over the world were unintentionally vibing over good music and drinks. This was the magic I was looking for. Fellowship without motives. Having that space to smile at a stranger and exchange stories. Certainly we wouldn’t have experienced it if we were at a hotel where we would be confined to our room. I have yet to go to a hotel where the lobby was super lit with drinks, games, and music lol. Would I stay again....Hell Yes! Definitely will be checking out their location near Lake Como!
There is such beauty in the unknown. Finding courage to step out of your story and into someone else’s. It reminds us to make memories. If you are ever in Europe, I definitely recommend staying at this chain of hostels. Visit https://www.ostellobello.com/about-us/ for more information regarding the various locations. Remember travel doesn’t have to break your bank...you will always leave better than when you arrived.
